Spelthorne Borough Council has recently installed solar panels at their Community Centres in Ashford and Staines

The renewable energy generated by the solar panels will be used to run the centres, reducing the energy required from the grid and contribute to the council's ongoing work to reduce its own carbon emissions. As well as providing a cheaper source of energy, the power generated provides an income through the Government's Feed-in Tariff, representing a net profit of £90,000 over the 25 year lifespan of the panels.

Cllr Nick Gething, Spelthorne's Cabinet Member for the Environment said: "We want to lead by example and reduce the council's carbon footprint by making our buildings more energy efficient. We hope to introduce more in the near future."

Solar panels capture the sun's energy and use it to either heat water or convert it into electricity. They don't need direct sunlight to work and will still produce some energy on a cloudy day. Solar electricity is a green, renewable energy and doesn't release any pollutants.
